FAQs

Diet and Health

Q. At the end of the day, most of your products are coated in breadcrumbs and fried – how can this form part of a healthy menu?

A. Birds Eye Foodservice is committed to providing nutritious, natural food. However, we also want to provide tasty food that your clients will want to eat. For example, we know that one of the most effective ways to persuade a child to eat fish is to coat it in crispy breadcrumbs.

All our breaded and battered products are designed to meet strict nutrition standards, including fat and saturated fat, and may be oven cooked or grilled to avoid adding any additional fat on preparation

Also, our future innovation agenda will explore non fry technologies to further enhance the nutritional profile of our range

Q. Are any of your products low in fat or saturated fat?

A. It is important to remember that it is not just the TOTAL amount of fat we consume but the TYPE of fat that influences our health. Saturated fat is recognised as ‘bad’ for health whereas unsaturated fats are considered ‘good’ for health.

Our Cod Fish Fingers & Omega 3 Enriched Fish Fingers are low in saturated fat.

Birds Eye Foodservice has a strict internal nutrition policy with differing nutritional targets for different product categories. We changed the use of palm oil to sunflower oil in our factories to reduce levels of saturated fat and we continue to use vegetable oils with a similar or even lower level of saturated fat.

Q. Do you claim that your products are healthy in any way?

A. There are no unhealthy foods as such, just unhealthy diets! It is important to eat a wide variety of food as no single food contains all the nutrients we need. One meal eaten out as a ‘treat’ needs to be seen in the context of everything else that is eaten that day and over a whole week. Birds Eye Food Service products offer different nutrients with different benefits. For example:

Peas provide fibre, vitamin C and folate. The quick freezing process used by Birds Eye minimises the amount of Vitamin C lost, and then holds the remaining levels constant during storage.

Soya beans provide a valuable source of protein for vegetarians and can also help manage cholesterol levels.

Our Fish Fingers deliver fish in tasty form and experts advise we eat two portions of fish a week.

Omega 3 Enriched Fish Fingers deliver the essential fats EPA & DHA known collectively as Omega 3. Omega 3 is essential for the physical structure of the brain and helps maintain heart health.

Our chicken and beef burger range are a delicious source of protein, essential for growth and the repair and maintenance of body tissues.

At Birds Eye Foodservice we aim to provide caterers with a range of food products that can be included as part of a healthy menu / diet, together with sufficient information to help you make the food choice that best meets your particular menu planning needs.
